"An investment in people" is the guiding idea of the Frank A. Andreas Scholarship Foundation, which was established on December 21, 1964. The perpetual scholarship is a living legacy to promote character and leadership in future generations in memory of Frank A. Andreas (1939-1964) whose own leadership inspired many people. The Foundation was initiated by Virginia Andreas (sister of Frank) who, with the assistance of relatives and friends, secured community support, formalized and incorporated the Foundation, and provided initial funding.
Each year a Delano Joint Union High School graduate who demonstrates outstanding scholarship and leadership qualities is selected by the Foundation directors to receive a grant to further his/her education at a college or university. The annual award is given at Delano Joint Union High School where Frank A. Andreas served as student association president, graduating in 1957. Frank's personal philosophy (the valuing of each person regardless of ethnicity, gender, age. or other individual differences) was shaped in Delano through his participation in community organizations and events. His leadership abilities developed further when he became a United States Navy pilot and was selected commander of his regiment. This memorial for Ensign Frank A. Andreas, USNR, honors his commitment to people by contributing to the educational advancement of Delano's young men and women.
Incorporating directors of the Foundation were Mr. Jack C. Phillips, Jr., Dr. Frank E. Dyer, Rev. Theodore L Brohm, Mr. Al Wold, and Mr. George W. Granger. Others who have given of their time by serving as directors or officers of the corporation are Mr. James W. Andreas, Mr. Ralph Carpenter, Mr. Richard Kramer, Dr. Edward Yoon, Mr. Ronald Cole, Mr. Lido Sandrini, Mr. Harold Marshall, Mr. Harold Gregory, Rev. Eugene R. Holtz, Mr. Ruben Hill, Mr. Angel Diaz, Dr. Robert Flores, Mr. Wayne Billingsley, Mr. Eugene Daniels, Mr. Thomas Hocking, Dr. Leonard Dalton, Mr. Robert Selent, Mrs. Sherril Hufnagel, Dr. Richard Smithey, Mr. Brian Beck, Dr. Terri Nuckols and Ms. April Gregerson.. The current board of directors consists of Dr. Rebecca Larson, Mr. John Andreas III, Mr. Timothy Denton and Dr. Richard Williams.
At the Foundation's inception, assets amounted to approximately $4000.00. Within ten years these had grown to $5,800.00 and by November of 1982 assets totaled approximately $11,000.00. The dramatic increase was due largely to the efforts of the LC Kreim family who publicized the Frank A. Andreas Scholarship Foundation as a representative community foundation, able to put to productive use commemorative gifts honoring deceased family members or friends. In this sense, the Foundation represents families who are joining together with other families who care. Donations are tax deductible under the Foundation's Tax ID number 95-2424817. In 1997, the Foundation's assets were $27,500.00.
Since awarding of grants is intended to be perpetual, the amount of the annual scholarship is determined necessarily by the income the Foundation generates, which is primarily derived from interest. The initial grant was $300.00, remaining that level until 1976, when it was raised to $400.00. In 1997, it was increased to $500.00, in 1979 to $600.00, in 1983 to $800.00, in 1986 to $1,000.00 and in 1987 to $1,200.00. Currently the Frank A. Andreas Scholarship award is $1,600.00, and the James W. Andreas Service Award is $500.00.
In the event of the dissolution of the Foundation, the accumulated assets of the corporation shall be distributed by the Directors to the Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University in memory of Frank A. Andreas, as directed by the articles of incorporation.
The Delano Joint Union High School District office at 1747 Princeton Street, Delano, CA 93215-1501 is the official location for the transaction of the Foundation's business.
