The Frank A. Andreas Scholarship and the James W Andreas Service Award are merit-based grants designed to commend and reward Delano High School students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership and scholarship. Financial circumstances are not a factor in the selection.
Criteria equally considered in determining the award recipient are:
(1) Scholarship
(2) Student activity
(3) Community activity participation
(4) Character
In evaluating a student's scholarship quality, consideration is given to the degree of difficulty in courses and completed, the average grade received and scholastic honors achieved.
In evaluating student activity participation, consideration is given to the quantity and quality of involvement in student council, class offices or activities, school clubs, athletic teams, and other special endeavors which contribute to school life.
In evaluating community activity participation, consideration is given to religious interest or affiliation, membership in community youth organizations, and the extent of involvement in civic affairs the benefit the community.
In evaluating character, consideration is given to the student's capacity to balance open-mindedness with strength of conviction, ability to inspire peers towards positive action, devotion to country, and demonstration of high personal ideals.
Although the prospective recipient must indicate intent to further his/her education at a college or university, no formal application is necessary to be eligible for this award.
In accordance with these guidelines, a faculty screening committee selects approximately six finalists to be interviewed by the Board of Directors of the Frank A. Andreas Scholarship Foundation. The faculty screening committee also prepares a resume on each finalist indicating all pertinent data on academic standing, achievements, and activity involvement allowed to be released from school records. It is suggested that students review their official records to verify accuracy and completeness.
At an appropriately scheduled time (usually in May), the interviews are conducted. Each candidate is presented to the Foundation's Board of Directors privately for a period of 10-15 minutes. It is important for candidates to know that the interview is conducted in an informal atmosphere, and that questions are generally subjective in nature. As each candidate's resume is already in the hands of the directors, the purpose of the interview is to allow the directors the opportunity to evaluate how well the candidate communicates his/her values, philosophy, and aspirations.
At the conclusion of the interviews the directors select that year's award recipients, whose names are held in confidence until it is announced officially at the Senior Awards Assembly of presentation ceremony. The Frank A Andreas Scholarship award is a recognition of achievement which includes a grant made payable to the recipient in two installments, payable in two semesters of enrollment in a college or university. Since the selected recipient may decline acceptance of the monetary grant or may cause himself/herself to be disqualified, the Board of Directors also selects an alternate recipient, whose name will be announced only if it becomes necessary to re-designate the grant recipient. The James W Andreas Service Award is a one time payment.
